Manuel Rico es doctor ingeniero industrial por la Universidad de Oviedo (1989) y Catedrático de Universidad de la Universidad de Gijón en el Departamento de Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica, de Computadores y de Sistemas.

Es coautor de más de 160 artículos en revistas y conferencias internacionales, ha participado en más de 20 proyectos de investigación y ha realizado 15 contratos de transferencia tecnológica a empresas. También es coautor de 5 patentes españolas y ha participado en el desarrollo de 10 productos industriales comerciales.

En 1996 recibió el premio IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Meritorious Paper Award.
