SUMMARY:IEEE Distinguished Lecture by Chao Tian (Texas A&M University)
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, May 6\, Prof. Chao Tian from Texas A&M University will visit the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid\, Campus Leganés\, to give his Distinguished Lecture:\nTitle: "Computer-Aided Investigation of Information-Theoretic Limits: An Overview”\nAbstract: The linear programming (LP) formulation of information measures provides a solid mathematical framework to identify the fundamental limits of information systems computationally. A critical issue of this approach is however its high computational complexity. To reduce the computation burden of this approach\, we can utilize the symmetry structure in such systems. The strength of the symmetry-reduced approach is illustrated in several well-known difficult problems\, such as regenerating codes\, coded caching\, and private information retrieval\, which provides new and non-trivial outer bounds. In addition to rate bounds\, more in-depth studies can be conducted on the joint entropy structure of these computed bounds\, which often lead to reverse-engineered novel code constructions and further allow disproving linear code achievability. Finally\, we discuss two new directions: the first is to allow the utilization of non-Shannon-type inequalities in the computational approach\, and the second is to convert the original LP into a sequence of smaller LPs\, both of which appear to be awaiting certain suitable machine-learning techniques.\nSpeaker(s): Dr. Chao Tian\nRoom: 4.1.D01\, Bldg: Torres Quevedo\, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid\, Leganés\, Av. de la Universidad 30\, Legenés\, Madrid\, Spain\, 28911

SUMMARY:IEEE PES ESPAÑA | | An assessment of the Iberian Exception to control electricity prices
DESCRIPTION:IEEE PES ESPAÑA | | THE ENERGY TRANSITION | Towards a DECARBONIZED ENERGY | An assessment of the Iberian Exception to control electricity prices\nEstimados Miembros del Capítulo IEEE PES ESPAÑA y de la comunidad de sistemas eléctricos de potencia\,\nDear IEEE PES Spain Members and Colleagues from power and energy community\,\nContinuing with the series on the topic\nLA TRANSICIÓN ENERGETICA | Hacia una ECONOMIA DESCARBONIZADA\nTHE ENERGY TRANSITION | Towards a DECARBONIZED ECONOMY\nThe energy transition towards a decarbonized economy will present a relevant challenge and a crucial transformation faced by our Society; Decelerating climate change effects is becoming a moral commitment.\nAs a society\, we are part of the decarbonized energy process that goes through the electrification of the economy and it is supported by renewables within a sustainable energy model.\nThis means a change of paradigm which heads towards an immediate exciting future full of challenges at all levels associated with flexibility in its widest conception. It is assumed that a change of paradigm\, that requires changing the focus from active based asset management towards the digitalization that ensures resiliency and security for the future electric systems.\nIn this context\, we need to contribute and stimulate the exchange of ideas from different perspectives and experiences\, creating a framework of reflection through these series of webinars. The expected benefit and impact is the identification of opportunities within the complexity associated with the change of paradigm.\nIn this Tomás Gómez and Pedro Linares (Universidad Pontificia Comillas) will share with us their assessment of the Iberian Exception to control electricity prices.\nTitle: An assessment of the Iberian Exception to control electricity prices\nContent: The Iberian Exception\, the mechanism designed by the Spanish and Portuguese governments to address high electricity prices resulting from the gas price crisis in 2021 and 2022\, has been met with controversy\, both regarding its real impact on electricity prices and also its unintended consequences\, such as increased (and subsidized) exports to France. In this paper we review the evidence on these impacts from different studies\, concluding that the mechanism may have produced\, depending on the assumptions\, some reductions in electricity prices for Iberian consumers or none at all\, but always at the expense of subsidies to French consumers and also increased rents for gas combined cycles\, higher gas consumption\, and larger CO2 emissions. Alternative mechanisms\, such as a temporary single-buyer scheme\, might have produced similar benefits without the downsides of the Exception.\nSpeakers: Tomás Gómez and Pedro Linareas (Universidad Pontificia Comillas)\nDate: May 16\, 2024\nTime: 18:00 – 20:00 (CET)\nLanguage: Spanish\nParticipation in these is open to everyone\, including both PES Members and non-Members. However\, REGISTRATION is necessary in order to receive the access link and URL to WebEx. The Connection link to this will be sent to the registrants by e-mail on the event day at 11:30 (CET).\nThe Registration closes at 11:30 (CET) on May 16\, 2024. The direct access to the REGISTRATION is at\nhttps://events.vtools.ieee.org/event/register/418724\nFor further information:\n: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/418724\nThe IEEE PES ESPAÑA System issues participation certificates in these to the attendees under request. The necessary condition for the System to issue the certificate is that the attendee must participate with at least one voice question during the question time.\nLooking forward to seeing you.\nKind regards\,\nLukas Sigrist\n(http://enotice.ieee.org/link.cfm?r=2t13DaV1ZQMWdxFUYxE9AA~~&pe=2r6s6cq1ZHJVREEnjcPg615Ax6pY5bB2EtOtT4-0u2m72qPy0vZwRE9mo5IxUHTUd3basEhCJ_h0e96RcJiJxA~~&t=dWSU4qsc8D7Oq-bfMacKwQ~~)\, Treasurer\nE-mail: (mailto:xmlopez@uvigo.es)\n(http://enotice.ieee.org/link.cfm?r=2t13DaV1ZQMWdxFUYxE9AA~~&pe=witkeIz8LkoUZhulkk1sx9E_1rKgceS0PT-I3sEMmkolP5KhdQvJt1UgDYhS1dKffWoWT6ki6UJ7wxyrpcMoGA~~&t=dWSU4qsc8D7Oq-bfMacKwQ~~)\n(http://enotice.ieee.org/link.cfm?r=2t13DaV1ZQMWdxFUYxE9AA~~&pe=6KDWid33EaTBI-e5_Rs9WqK142A_ryE8sq-2yQP_PxO6C0QjIOxeNlOScNiFfqtUlnufeNysO01BgoUQ8lmAKA~~&t=dWSU4qsc8D7Oq-bfMacKwQ~~)\nSpeaker(s): Tomás Gómez\, Pedro Linares\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/418724

SUMMARY:Announcement of Seminar: Prof. Danilo Demarchi (Politecnico di Torino)
DESCRIPTION:As reported in the report recently issued by the United Nations (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change –\nIPCC Report 2021)\, the benefits that technology provides to a green and sustainable economy are highly\nappreciated and under intense research and development globally. Circuits and Systems (CAS)\, which are the base\nfor any system\, can bring the needed functionalities and performances for reaching eco-friendly\, circular and\npractical solutions.\nThe IoT active connection in agriculture (as an example in Europe) are exponentially increasing\, proving that\nClimate-Smart Agriculture (CSA or Precision/Smart Agriculture) is a very fast-growing research field\, where more\ncontrolled quality production\, water use optimisation\, and a lower spreading of pesticides and fertilisers are some\nkey issues\, serving the improvement of food quality\, but also helping the respect of agriculture for the\nenvironment.\nFor reaching these targets\, electronics are the perfect tool for interfacing the data sources\, extracting the data\nand processing them\, and obtaining the needed information along the whole food chain: from the farmer\, and the\nprofessional stakeholders to the consumers.\nIn the Distinguished Lecture\, an overview of electronics for CSA will be presented\, analysing the possible solutions\nthat can bring important innovations\, advancing the actual strategies based on remote or indirect measurements\,\nby instead in-place measuring the plant and soil parameters (a.k.a. Let the Plants do The Talking)\, associated with\nmore standard information derived from environmental conditions. This new and disruptive technology\, related\nto Wearable Sensors for Plants\, the World Economic Forum has recently identified it as one of the “Top five\ntechnologies about to change the world”\, indicating it as one of the key solutions to increase food production by\n70% by 2050 to be able to feed the world population.\nApplication scenarios for crop monitoring\, water control\, information communication and decision support will be\npresented. In particular\, will be analysed technologies for reaching the needed levels of low power and low cost\,\nand the efficient ones to be applied to AgriFood at the global scale\, supporting also food security and\nsustainability.\nSpeaker(s): Danilo Marchi\nBldg: Institute of Microelectronics of Seville (IMSE-CNM)\, Cl Américo Vespucio\, 28. \, Parque Científico y Tecnológico Cartuja\, \, Sevilla\, Andalucia\, Spain\, 41092\, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/424031

SUMMARY:Distinguished Lecture by Nidal Nasser - Blockchain for IoT: Applications and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical devices and other objects embedded with electronics\, software\, sensors\, and network connectivity\, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data. It is expected that 25 billion objects will be connected to the Internet by 2025 through IoT-based solutions\, which will generate a huge amount of data\, around 4.4 trillion gigabytes\, by 2025. The IoT-connected objects will interact with their delayed environments to sense\, collect\, and forward the measured data. It is very important to ensure IoT solutions are deployed in trusted distributed environments to provide features such as seamless authentication\, data privacy\, security\, robustness against attacks\, easy deployment\, and self-maintenance. Blockchain is an emerging technology that will help to provide confidence in implementing the aforementioned characteristics for any IoT-based solution. In this talk\, I will address the evolution of IoT in different fields\, followed by real examples that present data growth. Then\, I will present the connection between IoT & Blockchain and the necessary components to develop an efficient framework. Challenges and future directions will be presented and discussed.\nSpeaker(s): Nidal Nasser\nBldg: Facultad de Educación\, UNED\, Calle de Juan del Rosal\, 14\, Madrid\, Madrid\, Spain\, 28040

SUMMARY:IEEE Distinguished Lecture by Anand Sarwate (Rutgers University)
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, July 2nd\, Prof. Anand Sarwate from Rutgers University give his Distinguished Lecture:\nTitle: "Learning with Structured Tensor Decompositions”\nAbstract: Many measurements or signals are multidimensional\, or tensor-valued. Vectorizing tensor data for statistical and machine learning tasks often results in having to fit a very large number of parameters. Using tensor decompositions to model such data can give a flexible and useful modeling framework whose complexity can adapt to the amount of data available. This talk will introduce classical decompositions (CP\, Tucker) as well as more recent ones (tensor train\, block tensor decomposition\, and low separation rank) and show how they can be used to learn scalable representations for tensor-valued data and make predictions from tensor-valued data. Time permitting\, we will describe applications in federated learning as well as open problems for future research.\nThe event will be transmitted via Teams: (https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_MTgzMjdkYjUtZDYxNi00NmUxLTk0YjAtNDQwZTIxYWQzMDdh%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%225f84c4ea-370d-4b9e-830c-756f8bf1b51f%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%22b4bdccba-f532-48cd-8208-457d6bc3086c%22%7d)\nCo-sponsored by: Universidad Rey Juan Carlos\, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid\nSpeaker(s): Dr. Anand Sarwate\,\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/425691
