IEEE PES ESPAÑA | | Artificial intelligence for energy systems. Developments from TU_DELFT and CITCEA-UPC

Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/421203

IEEE PES ESPAÑA | | THE ENERGY TRANSITION| | Artificial intelligence for energy systems. Developments from TU_DELFT and CITCEA-UPC From IEEE PES SPAIN we continue with the series on the topic THE ENERGY TRANSITION | Towards a DECARBONIZED ECONOMY The energy transition towards a decarbonized economy will present a relevant challenge and a crucial transformation faced by our Society; Decelerating climate change effects is becoming a moral commitment. As a society, we are part of the decarbonized energy process that goes through the electrification of the economy and it is supported by renewables within a sustainable energy model. This means a change of paradigm which heads towards an immediate exciting future full of challenges at all levels associated with flexibility in its widest conception. It is assumed that a change of paradigm, that requires changing the focus from active based asset management towards the digitalization that ensures resiliency and security for the future electric systems. In this context, we need to contribute and stimulate the exchange of ideas from different perspectives and experiences, creating a framework of reflection through these series of webinars. The expected benefit and impact is the identification of opportunities within the complexity associated with the change of paradigm. In this webinar, researchers from CITCEA-UPC and TU-DELFT will explain their recent developments on artifcial intelligence applications for energy systems. Title: Artificial intelligence for energy systems. Developments from TU_DELFT and CITCEA-UPC Contents: The event will start with an introduction to the main activities from TU Delft "AI Energy" Lab and CITCEA-UPC "Smart energy and grids" area, with special focus on machine learning applications for power systems. Developments from TU Delft "AI Energy Lab", include new computational methods for system operation and control that combine statistical machine learning and mathematical optimisation. Special attention will be paid to applications covering congestion managament, home energy management systems, security assessment and on the trust and generazability of AI. Developments from CITCEA-UPC "Smart energy and grids" area will address data-driven services for enhancing the operation and planning of electrical distribution grids. Announcement of Seminar: Prof. Danilo Demarchi (Politecnico di Torino)

Bldg: Institute of Microelectronics of Seville (IMSE-CNM), Cl Américo Vespucio, 28. , Parque Científico y Tecnológico Cartuja, , Sevilla, Andalucia, Spain, 41092, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/424031

As reported in the report recently issued by the United Nations (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – IPCC Report 2021), the benefits that technology provides to a green and sustainable economy are highly appreciated and under intense research and development globally. Circuits and Systems (CAS), which are the base for any system, can bring the needed functionalities and performances for reaching eco-friendly, circular and practical solutions. The IoT active connection in agriculture (as an example in Europe) are exponentially increasing, proving that Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA or Precision/Smart Agriculture) is a very fast-growing research field, where more controlled quality production, water use optimisation, and a lower spreading of pesticides and fertilisers are some key issues, serving the improvement of food quality, but also helping the respect of agriculture for the environment. For reaching these targets, electronics are the perfect tool for interfacing the data sources, extracting the data and processing them, and obtaining the needed information along the whole food chain: from the farmer, and the professional stakeholders to the consumers. In the Distinguished Lecture, an overview of electronics for CSA will be presented, analysing the possible solutions that can bring important innovations, advancing the actual strategies based on remote or indirect measurements, by instead in-place measuring the plant and soil parameters (a.k.a. Let the Plants do The Talking), associated with more standard information derived from environmental conditions. This new and disruptive technology, related to Wearable Sensors for Plants, the World Economic Forum has recently identified it as one of the “Top five technologies about to change the world”, indicating it as one of the key solutions to increase food production by 70% by 2050 to be able to feed the world population. Application scenarios for crop monitoring, water control, information communication and decision support will be presented. In particular, will be analysed technologies for reaching the needed levels of low power and low cost, and the efficient ones to be applied to AgriFood at the global scale, supporting also food security and sustainability. Distinguished Lecture by Nidal Nasser – Blockchain for IoT: Applications and Challenges

Bldg: Facultad de Educación, UNED, Calle de Juan del Rosal, 14, Madrid, Madrid, Spain, 28040

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical devices and other objects embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data. It is expected that 25 billion objects will be connected to the Internet by 2025 through IoT-based solutions, which will generate a huge amount of data, around 4.4 trillion gigabytes, by 2025. The IoT-connected objects will interact with their delayed environments to sense, collect, and forward the measured data. It is very important to ensure IoT solutions are deployed in trusted distributed environments to provide features such as seamless authentication, data privacy, security, robustness against attacks, easy deployment, and self-maintenance. Blockchain is an emerging technology that will help to provide confidence in implementing the aforementioned characteristics for any IoT-based solution. In this talk, I will address the evolution of IoT in different fields, followed by real examples that present data growth. Then, I will present the connection between IoT & Blockchain and the necessary components to develop an efficient framework. Challenges and future directions will be presented and discussed. Speaker(s): Nidal Nasser Bldg: Facultad de Educación, UNED, Calle de Juan del Rosal, 14, Madrid, Madrid, Spain, 28040
